The Windfarm Supporters Group started in the autumn 2009 when Viking Energy called together local people who had contacted them in support of the proposed windfarm.
Those at the meeting agreed to form a support group and from that moment on it has had no formal connections with the developers. We have raised all our income ourselves from donations.
The group does not have membership or a formal constitution but acts as a source of information to local people and campaigns for the windfarm. There is a small group of supporters who meet regularly to discuss what work needs to be done.
Windfarm Supporters come in many shapes and sizes and support Viking Energy for many different reasons - and some may have misgivings about some aspects of the proposal and would like to see changes - but we are all agreed it should be supported.
The environmental benefits are paramount for some members, concerned about climate change and determined the islands should play their full part in Scotland's ambitious greenhouse gas targets.
For others it is the financial and employment opportunities the windfarm offers that they see as most important. Many of these folk remember what Shetland used to be like before oil came and don't want to see a return to the old days when our young folk had to leave the islands and times were hard for many islanders.
